Mapping the Future: Chris Mifsud Discusses Land Surveying, Leadership, and the Path Forward

Updated: Jul 24

Introducing Chris Mifsud – the Founder and CEO of CM Surveying Ltd, a Land Surveyor, and the driving force behind the expanding CM Academy. With offices and projects

across both Malta and Gozo, Chris’s journey goes beyond surveys and

coordinates; it embodies passion, perseverance, and purpose.

From a Curiosity in Construction to a Career Calling

From an early age, Chris was captivated by the construction industry. While many young men aspired to become architects, Chris desired a more practical role. “I always wanted to be involved in construction,” he explains, “ I wanted to be out there, on site, making it happen.” This passion directed him on a specific path. Chris enrolled in a Draughtsman course before delving into Civil Engineering. “In the second year, I encountered land surveying during an apprenticeship. It was entirely new to me, and I was fascinated.” Starting with drafting plans for surveyors, he soon found himself on-site, fully engaged in the intricate yet fulfilling world of land surveying.

The Difficulties and Benefits of Beginning Anew

Like many in the industry, Chris encountered significant learning challenges at the start. “Initially, I didn’t even know what land surveying was,” he confesses. Moving from theory to practice, he had to learn how to use advanced equipment and adjust to the specific requirements of each location. “Every site is different—even if the job is similar. It’s not straightforward.” However, those early challenges only strengthened his determination. Today, Chris not only navigates sites himself but also guides a team of full-time surveyors, helping them overcome the same obstacles he once faced.

Building a Company, Earning Trust

CM Surveying’s success is founded on more than just technical expertise. As both the CEO and a practicing surveyor, Chris combines leadership with hands-on experience.

“Clients need to have trust in their land surveyor,” he states. “Our work impacts every phase of every site, from the initial measurements through to the project's completion.”

Beyond topographic surveys and land disputes, Chris and his team specialize in large-scale construction projects, including bridges, hotels, residential buildings, and heritage sites.

Navigating a Changing Industry

The field of land surveying has undergone rapid transformation. "Technology has significantly improved—tools are now faster and more precise," Chris states. However, this advancement brings added complexity. "Modern construction sites frequently involve steel structures alongside concrete, and land is much more costly. Precision is crucial."

Although Artificial Intelligence hasn't made a significant impact in the industry yet, Chris stays informed about new equipment. Nevertheless, he insists that land surveying requires a human element: "AI can't replace an on-site presence. You need someone who grasps the land, the context, the project." A significant issue in the industry? Awareness. "There is a knowledge gap between surveyors, clients, and architects," Chris cautions. "Many people underestimate how essential our role is in a construction project."

Investing in the Future: CM Academy

This is one reason why Chris is so dedicated to education. His latest project, CM Academy, seeks to close the gap between academic theory and industry practice. “We aim to properly train the next generation—individuals who are technically proficient and prepared for the field.” He aspires for the profession to gain more formal recognition, with licensed surveyors being regarded as highly as architects. “The responsibility we bear should be mirrored in the status of our profession.”

More Than a Career—A Lifestyle

When asked what continues to motivate Chris after years in the industry, his response is clear:"Every day is unique. One day you're at a construction site, the next day you're in a shelter. Each day is an adventure." It's also highly fulfilling. "You encounter incredible people, from ordinary individuals to entrepreneurs, engineers, and beyond. There's always something new to learn, and you can witness the tangible outcomes of your efforts."

Final Thought

For Chris, land surveying goes beyond just being a job—it's a vibrant and captivating profession brimming with opportunities. He states, “We need more individuals to recognize it as such. That's the purpose of CM Academy: to train, inspire, and elevate this field.”
